I hate plastic shrink wrap. And forget those nasty unopenable-without-instruments-of-destruction packages that come with some products today. And I take an immediate dislike to any product that takes me more than 30 seconds to pop out of its packaging. I buy them, but I dislike them until I free them from their plastic captivity. Therefore when I saw Amazon was offering AmazonBasics, a 4.7GB 16x DVD-R (100-Pack Spindle) in “Frustration-Free Packaging”, I immediately ordered the item.
Let’s face it, DVD-Rs are DVD-Rs. They have various write speeds (these are 16X), but essentially unless you purchase the premium long-life manufactured versions, they are essentially the same. Therefore, this review and the related rating are not so much about the DVD-Rs, which work fine, as they are about the so-called “Frustration-Free” packaging.
It’s not exactly clear how this packing is frustration-free. It comes with a plastic wrap around the spindle, but that’s not necessarily hard to remove. The spindle itself, however, feels somewhat flimsy and is not quite as easy to open as other DVD spindles that I own. It’s not hard, it’s just a little bit different and turns in a somewhat different manner. And it doesn’t seem as reassuring when you close it. (With 100 DVD-Rs sitting in a stack a foot high on a spindle, you don’t want them falling off on to your desk or floor anytime soon.)
My three-star rating isn’t because I feel that the packaging is bad. It’s fine. It’s just that I expected so much more in something that claims to be “Frustration-Free Packaging.” It should almost open itself. And this product does not.

I was nervous about these being a store-brand, as sometimes non-brand office products are crappy. However, I have had great experiences with Amazon’s Pinzon Brand of linens and kitchen items, so I was cautiously optimistic about their foray into office products. I was not disappointed!! I liked that I didn’t have to slice open some clear clamshell to get to the package, and what was inside was just as nice as more-famous brands. I have had no trouble burning or using any so far (didn’t get through 100 yet!) Certainly a great value for me!!! I hope to see more Amazon-branded products as they seem to keep quality in mind with their offerings.

First the only bad point of this product, Amazons “frustration free” packaging, its supposed to be easy to open without the use of scissors, knives, box cutters, teeth, etc but I couldnt get it open with just my hands I had to use a scissor, I even had my husband try and he couldnt rip the packaging open.
Now onto the product itself: these are quality DVD-Rs that I found to be easy to work with. You can store up to 120 minutes, 4.7 Gb on each disc and the speed is well…its quick, I had no problems at all!! I recorded a few movies, and tv series and each time it was quick and the DVD’s looked perfect when played on my computer and TV.
Amazon is offering these DVD-Rs at a great price and you get 100 of them! Total bargain. I would recommend these to anyone and use Amazonbasic products again.

Okay, Amazon has just come out with their own brand and given the simple technology involved, we had not problems with recording on this format: we use it for data transfer, recording shows from our tivo recorder. The recorded format could be used on other computers and our dvd players. We certainly get two hours of recording at high quality (note: not HD). So where is the plus for buying this brand from other well known brands out there: THE PRICE. We no longer have to chase weekly bargains and sales.

The AmazonBasics DVD-R performs as good as (or better than) most other brands. We usually forgo trying new media, but appreciate the cost effectiveness of the Amazon brand.
Our usual purchase is Sony DVD-R 16x Recordable DVD (4.7GB) – 100 Disc Spindle or Samsung Pleomax 16X DVD-R 4.7GB 25 Disc Spindle because of their success rates.
However, since going through roughly 25% of the package, so far we’ve experienced no errors or problem discs. Movies have played fine and data continues to burn successfully. Of course, we will update this review if anything changes, and may consider trying the AmazonBasics 700MB 52x CD-R (100-Pack Spindle) [Amazon Frustration-Free Packaging] too.
